Dr. Azalia Mirhoseini is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and the founder of the Scaling Intelligence Lab. Her research focuses on developing scalable, self-improving AI systems that leverage machine learning, systems, and natural language processing to advance the goal of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In addition to her academic role, she is a Senior Staff Scientist at Google DeepMind, where she works on frontier AI research.
Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Mirhoseini held key positions in leading AI labs such as Anthropic and Google Brain. She is recognized for her groundbreaking work in Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architectures, now widely used in generative AI models, and her pioneering reinforcement learning approach to chip floorplanning, which has been applied to design advanced AI accelerators and embedded chips. Her work has been published in top venues like Nature, and she holds numerous accolades, including MIT Technology Review's 35 Under 35 Award and the Best ECE Thesis Award from Rice University.
Dr. Mirhoseini earned her BSc in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University. Her research has been widely featured in media outlets such as MIT Technology Review, IEEE Spectrum, The Verge, and WIRED.
